Embellishing Corner Stones, A First Capture, Delicious Simple Food from Canadian Needle Nana

Though I hear these frogs every spring- you can't not hear them as their sounds have been likened to  chain saw or motorcycle loudness levels- I had never ever seen one, let alone gotten a photo till this summer. One day I took a photo of a strange looking, very tiny frog/toad sitting on a hosta leaf in the back yard.  I found out I'd captured the somewhat reclusive Spring Peeper frog when I looked it up later on. Finally and Another first for me. I like those ET like toes and the way his markings all ...

Hand Quilting, Free Patterns, Fair and Bird Sounds from Canadian Needle Nana

I step out on the veranda quite often during the day. Sometimes to smell the air with the hope that it is clear enough (free of smoke) to take a walk. But I always stop awhile and listen. Summer's song is still strong...birds tweeting and singing. Occasional squirrel chitter or blue jay squawk. I tell myself to remember this in winter. My Dad became a little hard of hearing in older age and Mom always said how sorry she felt for him because he could no longer hear the songbirds singing.

Speaking of which, the Song Sparrows are ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood Quilt Flimsy, Family from Canadian Needle Nana

My week has gone well and included a visit with older daughter who lives about 30 minutes away. I love her little house so much; while it is ideal for a single person as herself it would also make the perfect retirement home. The back of the house has two huge bay windows and the side windows are extra large so a very bright house inside.

When I moved here to Ottawa, I had intended to live with her in this house. We had a two bedroom apartment built in the basement for me and that has never been lived ...

Free Patterns, Blue Courthouse Steps, Rosy Garden from Canadian Needle Nana

The rose bushes are all in bloom. This year the first blooms opening up were tinged by pink because of the cooler temperatures we had had when they were buds...low single digits overnight and staying cooler during the day.

These hardy bushes will bloom all summer and into October as I noted last fall. The bees love them too. I must look where I could purchase more of them.

Sitting waiting for grandson one day, I watched the chinstrap Canada Geese stand about in parking lot puddles. It was very hot that day and they just stood there looking ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood, Flowers, Dads from Canadian Needle Nana

Hello all, I've been very busy with family stuff and not having many spare moments to visit you, my blogging friends. And I'm beat in the evenings but everything is going along well overall and I seem to have entered a phase where my stress and worry have lessened. I'm very grateful for the positives of life and being able to stick to my mantra of one day at a time.

Supposedly squirrel proof but definitely not chipmunk proof. Note his cheeks are full.

The garden is making me so happy this year. All the extra weeding ...

Rainbow House, Garden Blooms, Cardinal Couple from Canadian Needle Nana

I showed you Mr. and Mrs. American Goldfinch- here are Mr. and Mrs. Cardinal. Not a great photo but it isn't often they are this close together. They are around a lot so I think nesting nearby.

My arms are a little tired typing. We trimmed low hanging branches up and down the laneway and it was my job to gather them from the ground and take to various big piles around the property. I used the wheelbarrow and my arms got a bit of a workout which is good for them. Much more of this to be done ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL, Feelings, Monarch Applique from Canadian Needle Nana

Mr. and Mrs. American Goldfinch...I hope they are discussing housing options here at the wooden house. I love to watch them.

Here is a red house for the Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL with my paper pieced star block.
They are being stitched faster but I'm not sure any better. I am planning a lighter colour for the next one perhaps in peaches or summery kinds of shades.

With my Rainbow Neighbourhood project nearing an end, I'm thinking about an applique project next. Maybe this one, Monarch, from Laundry Basket Quilts. I've had this pattern for years and ...

Red House Block, Plus Quilt Borders and Help Needed from Canadian Needle Nana

We seem to be down to just one ground hog-this fellow. After the dogs gave him a little chase in the back yard one day, I now see him more regularly out front and on the side lawn. There's about 9 more acres he could explore so I'm not sorry he's not in the fenced back yard.

The crocuses opened and faded quickly in the intense heat we had -that was a little bit sad. But a traditional sign of rebirth in the garden however brief.
The dogwood trees are in bloom also. Many of them here ...

Rainbow House, Veranda Stitching, Garden Chat, Free Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

My Raven portrait.  He was glowing in the early morning sun. They visit the feeders and front garden and actually let the little red squirrels boss them around. I 'm holding my breath for the day that will not be such wise behaviour on the part of the squirrels.
I've been in the garden a lot lately. It reminded me I need one of those fancy kneeling benches that flips to an actual seat like Karen at Quilts...Etc. showed in one of her spring garden posts. I was very busy with pulling out the surprising amount of weeds ...

Blue House, June at Hawk Run Hollow, Me at the Spa from Canadian Needle Nana

I love lilacs and enjoyed several trees at the farm. My lone tree here is a little lacking in blooms though I've tried several interventions to help it. The flowers seem to fade even as the buds are opening. They are such gorgeous colours...this one is a bicolour Sensation...how I wish it were healthier.

Below is Claude Monet's Resting Under the Lilac Tree. Now that's a lilac tree! His idea of painting people in the early years was to give impressions of people in a picture.
I have my Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL blue house all ...

Tulip Bouquet, Nona QAL, Blueberry Cream Lasagna from Canadian Needle Nana

The first turtle sighting took place last week. They do seem to wait for sunshine with warmth here. And have disappeared again with the temperatures dropping-overnight frost warnings continue.
Daughter gave us another of her cakes. This one is Blueberry Cream Cheesecake Lasagna. Recipe here  What a delicious mixture!  A wonderful summertime dessert and Tony's favourite  part was that there was a lot of it.

Lone Star Medallion, Pink Rainbow House, Free Pretty Patterns from Canadian Needle Nana

I normally want to cling to my time but have to admit I'm glad this week is almost over. There are some things you just want behind you. But there is always good stuff happening too...life is not static thankfully. I felt off my routine so pushed myself to exercise this morning and jog the trail with Ned. I am better for the fresh air and activity.

Oh the greening up of everything outside is just wonderful to witness. Kitchen window view yesterday. That's the faucet there in the almost middle.

Here is a small Song Sparrow ...

Applique, Music, Free Patterns, Rainbow Neighbourhood from Canadian Needle Nana

The sun came out and dried up all the rain...yes that happened last Friday. Glorious sunshine almost every day since. Temps are a bit cool and there are frost warnings at night. It is shivery still in the shade, but the sunshine makes up for it. Daffodils are blooming and the tiny leaves are appearing on trees. Several of the indoor plants are budding. I'm itching to get these outside.

I began stitching this applique block during the Coronation. I thought it a little tiara like. A dresden block for my next Rainbow house, a pink one.
I ...

Two Houses- One, Flower Power, Overwhelm Happens, Roguish Me from Canadian Needle Nana

Rainy days do not get me down. That's good because we have had rain warnings with constant downpours for the last five days. Ned and I have gotten in our walks, me in raincoat and boots, Ned in his birthday suit.  Rainy days make me want to curl up and get cosy inside. How do they affect you?

Mary Anne created this sweet card below for a friend. She used paper scraps! How clever! She shows it in this Magpies Mumblings post where she also shares the reason why she doesn't sew clothes. Her story from high school ...

Free Patterns, EPP Scrappy Plus Quilt, Turkeys, First Flowers from Canadian Needle Nana

The first and only flowers in the garden to open so far are these miniature Daffodils. They popped up in an area full of low growing shrub used for hedges - I don't know the name but may be Juniper. But I think the thick shrub kept them protected somehow during the adverse spring weather.
The turkeys have been walking through lately and I was quite taken with this male travelling with four females. Wow to all those feathers!
He is surprisingly colourful with blue around his eyes and an interesting red as well. I'll say again I'm ...

Rainbow Purple House, Strawberry Pattern, Gardening Chores from Canadian Needle Nana

Inside too there is more green and also white growth. I like how the white Polka Dot plant is becoming more dotty with the longer minutes of light. Like its true self is emerging.  It makes such a difference!

I cleaned several windows outside and liked how the outdoor greens were blending with the greens inside. I use a 3 step stool...don't feel comfortable going any higher these days.
I did get some items on my last Tuesday's To Do list done. I spent a couple of hours also cleaning and tidying the garage. I cleaned the ...

Rainbow Neighbourhood QAL Lesson #1, Days Filled With Joy SAL, Online Shopping from Canadian Needle Nana

These days most of the wetland area is flooded and unwalkable which is too bad as the path winds through neat little treed areas. It was near this spot, I went through the ice and up to my thighs in water back a couple of years ago.  About August, this area will dry out enough to walk without boots. The tree in the middle is a monstrous size, one of the Mother Trees here and I call it a Halloween tree.

The mallards are back on the little pond- I wonder each year if they are the same ducks. I ...
